HEMET: Two arrested after vehicle loses tire during short pursuit

HEMET – Two people were arrested after a short pursuit when the vehicle the pair were in lost a tire and nearly smashed into a family of eight when the out of control car hurtled through a stop sign Sunday, Nov. 20.

The pursuit began in the area of Mayberry Avenue and Yale Street and ended less than two minutes later near Mayberry Avenue and Cornell Street.

The pursuit began at 8:50 p.m., when a Hemet police officer spotted the car travelling eastbound on Mayberry Avenue. The officer noticed the vehicle was weaving on the roadway and that the driver appeared to be impaired.

Upon seeing the officer, the driver immediately fled the area at high rate of speed; before the officer could attempt to conduct a traffic enforcement stop.

The suspect drove without regard for the safety of other citizens of the pursuing officer, and was seen running at least two stop signs.

As the suspect fled eastbound towards Cornell Street, the vehicle he was driving suddenly lost one of its tires. After the car lost it’s tire it nearly collided with a car filled with a family of eight, including six children and two adults.

The driver of the vehicle with the family, a Hemet resident who wished to remain anonymous, described the incident saying, “They almost hit my family. They blew through a stop sign and almost ran right into us. The sound was piercing and I almost had a panic attack.”

After the vehicle lost its tire it began to slow down and a passenger leaped from the still moving vehicle and tried to flee on foot. He was quickly apprehended by responding officers.

The driver was apprehended moments later by Hemet police officers with assistance from a Riverside County Sheriff’s K9 deputy when his disabled vehicle came to a stop.

Both suspects were later determined to have warrants and both were arrested and later booked into county jail.

The two have not yet been identified by officials.

This is a developing story. More information will be updated as it becomes available.
