HEMET – One person sustained moderate injuries in a two-vehicle, rollover traffic collision Monday, Dec. 12.

The accident happened at the intersection of W. Latham Avenue and N. Gilbert Street in Hemet. The area where the accident occurred was just east of the World Baptist Church and north of Florida Avenue.

Hemet Fire and Police officials were dispatched to the collision after multiple citizens called 911 to report the wreck that caused one of the vehicles, described as a lifted, white, Jeep Cherokee to lose control and overturn. The other vehicle was described as a dark-colored Toyota.

When police and fire officials arrived, they found the Jeep on its roof on W. Latham Avenue, just west of the intersection with N. Gilbert Street. The Toyota was pulled over to the side of the road on N. Gilbert Street just south of the intersection.

The Jeep sustained major damage when it overturned and the Toyota sustained moderate front-end damage on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

A preliminary investigation revealed the Jeep was traveling westbound on W. Latham Avenue when it smashed into the Toyota when its driver attempted to cross through the intersection. The Toyota was traveling southbound on N. Gilbert Street when the accident occurred.

AMR medics evaluated the drivers and a passenger from the two vehicles. One of the drivers involved in the accident who had complaints of pain and medics transported the victim to Hemet Valley Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

The accident caused traffic to back up on N. Gilbert Street in both directions while police officials conducted an accident investigation. W. Latham Avenue was temporarily closed in both directions of travel until a tow truck used a winch to right the overturned Jeep back onto its wheels to be towed from the scene of the wreck. City of Hemet police volunteers assisted with traffic control until the vehicles were cleared from the roadway

Hemet police officials are investigating the cause of the crash to determine the cause of the accident; however, the Jeep appeared to have the right of way, while the Toyota had a posted stop sign at the intersection.

It was not immediately known if speeding or alcohol and/or drug intoxication were contributing factors in the collision, pending further investigation.
