HEMET – Hemet police officers arrested a man who was reportedly armed with a gun and acting erratically Saturday, Dec. 17.

Officers arrested the man for being under the influence of a controlled substance after the subject fled on foot from an officer. The incident happened in the 700 block of N. State Street in Hemet.

Officers were dispatched to the area when City of Hemet emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from a citizen reporting the mans erratic behavior at 2:17 p.m. The subject was reportedly pacing back and forth and yelling about someone stealing money from him.

The caller told dispatchers the man, who has not yet been identified, was acting in an extremely bizarre manner and was repeatedly removing an item from his waistband that appeared to be a handgun.

Just before the first officer arrived, the 911 caller reported that the man had possibly entered the M&H Dollar Store.

The first officer arrived in the area three minutes after the call was dispatched, at 2:20 p.m. The officer almost immediately reported that the man was fleeing from him. The officer told dispatchers the man was running northbound on State Street and he was in foot pursuit.

The officer caught up with the subject about one minute into the foot pursuit and held him at gunpoint as additional responding officers arrived in the area and helped to safely detain the man for further investigation.

After the man was safely detained, officers searched the area for the reported handgun, but they were not able to find one. Officers did find the man was in possession of a razor knife that resembled a gun.

After interviewing the subject, officers determined the man was possibly under the influence of a controlled substance. Officers transported the man to the Hemet police station where a nurse drew blood for toxicology tests to determine his level of drug intoxication.

No citizens or officers were injured during the incident and arrest.
