RIVERSIDE – Four people were injured in a two-vehicle traffic collision after a pickup truck ran a red light and smashed into an SUV New Year’s Eve. The accident, that left one person in critical condition, happened Saturday, Dec. 31, at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Jackson Street in Riverside.

Riverside Police and Fire personnel responded to the intersection about 9:07 p.m., after City of Riverside emergency dispatchers received several 911 calls from citizens reporting the major-injury traffic collision.

When emergency first responders arrived at the scene of the wreck, they found a red Chevrolet Silverado and a silver Nissan Pathfinder that had collided in the intersection. After the two vehicles collided, the Chevrolet smashed into a tree.

Firefighter/paramedics treated four victims from the two vehicles before AMR medics transported the injured victims to Riverside Community Hospital for further treatment.

The front passenger of the Chevrolet suffered moderate injuries and the 21-year-old male driver suffered major traumatic injuries and was listed in critical condition, according to a press release from Riverside police officials.

Officers from the Riverside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) were called to the scene to conduct an investigation into the accident.

Based on their preliminary findings, officers determined the Chevrolet was traveling east on Magnolia Avenue when the driver failed to stop at a red light. The Chevrolet collided with the Nissan that was driving north through the intersection on Jackson Street.

Alcohol and/or drug intoxication had not been ruled out as contributing factors in the traffic collision.

Riverside PD’s investigation into the accident is active and ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or who witnesses the collision is urged to call Riverside Police Traffic Detective K. Madsen at (951) 826-8723.
