MOUNTAIN PASS: Victims, including infant, killed in New Year’s Day fatal accident ID’d

MOUNTAIN PASS – A grandfather and his infant grandson, who were killed in an early-morning traffic accident New Year’s Day Sunday, Jan. 1, have been identified by coroner’s officials.

The deadly accident happened on Interstate 15 south of Mountain Pass about 4:50 a.m. Mountain Pass is about 16 miles southwest of the California-Nevada border.

The victims, who were later identified by coroner’s officials as 79-year-old Abraham Jones and two-month old Timol Jenkins Jr., were killed when their vehicle was struck from behind after their car was involved in a separate, unrelated traffic accident.

Three other three passengers in their car were hospitalized with “major injuries,” according to CHP officials.

Jones, Jenkins, and the other three passengers were all residents of Las Vegas NV and investigators believe the five were on their way home at the time of the accident. It was not immediately known where the five were traveling from.

Jones was driving northbound on I-15 when his 2015 Nissan Altima was struck from behind by a 2002 Infinity G35. The impact from the collision caused the Infinity to spin off into the center divider. Jones’ Nissan came to a stop in the number one lane.

CHP officials began responding to the scene of the accident after someone called 911 to report the collision.

Jones, who was driving the Nissan, got out of the vehicle and was standing behind it when a 2006 Toyota Corolla plowed into him and the back of the Nissan.

Jones and Jenkins Jr., who was a rear seat center passenger in the Nissan Altima, both succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP officers from the department’s Barstow area station are investigating the cause of the deadly collision.
