RIVERSIDE: Pedestrian struck by car in critical condition

RIVERSIDE – A 39-year-old man was critically injured in an early-morning, vehicle versus pedestrian accident Tuesday, Jan. 24. The collision happened at the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and California Avenue in Riverside.

City of Riverside Police and Fire personnel responded to the intersection about 5:32 a.m., after Riverside emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from a citizen reporting the vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision.

When they arrived, fire and police officials located the male victim down in the roadway. Paramedics treated the victim at the scene before AMR medics transported him to Riverside Community Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. His condition was listed as critical.

Officers from the Riverside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team were called to the scene and are investigating the accident.

During their initial investigation, officers determined that a silver Honda Civic was traveling north on Van Buren Boulevard when it collided with a pedestrian in the cross walk at California Avenue.

“Preliminary evidence at the scene suggests that the pedestrian entered the cross walk against the traffic control device and the Honda Civic was proceeding through the intersection with a green light,” an official explained in a press release about the collision.
