JURUPA VALLEY: Horses killed in rollover accident
JURUPA VALLEY — Two horses died and a driver was injured after a truck towing a horse trailer was involved in a single-vehicle rollover accident. The Sunday, Sept. 17 accident happened at the intersection of Jurupa Road and Etiwanda Avenue in Jurupa Valley.
Firefighters and law enforcement officials were dispatched to the scene of the fatal accident at 8:07 p.m., after a 911 caller reported the rollover.
“Firefighters arrived on scene of a single-vehicle traffic collision, with a horse trailer upside down, off the side of the road,” Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Public Information Officer April Newman explained in an incident report.
Eleven firefighters from two engine companies and one truck company responded to the scene of the deadly wreck, said Newman. They were assisted by City of Norco Animal Control officials and members of the Norco Animal Rescue Team.
At 9:31 p.m. Newman updated the ongoing rescue efforts for the horses saying, “Both horses are contained within a horse trailer and firefighters will work with NART and Animal Control to extricate the animals.”
She described that the trailer was still upside down and both horses had suffered “major” injuries.
While firefighters, NART members and Animal Control officials worked to extricate the severely injured horses, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Jurupa Valley Police Station investigated the cause of the accident. Their investigation is ongoing.
Despite the efforts of all agencies involved in the rescue, both horses succumbed to their injuries shortly before 10 p.m., according to Newman.
The driver of the truck that overturned suffered minor injuries. He was evaluated at the scene and declined further treatment.
