UPDATED: Thursday, Sept. 21, 6 p.m. Officials arrest three in connection with early morning homicide

REDDING — Redding PD officials have announced the arrest of three people allegedly involved in the home invasion robbery-related homicide of a Redding resident. The murder happened in the 1200 block of Heavenly Oak Lane near Lofty Oak Drive in Redding.

The homicide investigation is somehow related with a drug-related, armed robbery that occurred at a TA Truck Stop and Travel Center about seven hours before the murder, Redding Police Lt. Pete Brindley explained in an updated press release after the three alleged suspects were arrested.

The Wednesday, Sept 20, truck stop robbery happened on Knighton Road in Redding after a 20-year-old Cottonwood resident was robbed of all his cash at gunpoint while attempting to purchase one-half ounce of marijuana for $300. The narcotics-related armed robbery is being investigated by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

“The robbery victims from the T.A. Truck Stop are not associated with the incident on Heavenly Oak Lane,” said Brindley.

The Heavenly Lane robbery and homicide investigation began at 12:03 a.m., when Redding PD officers were called to the scene regarding what was initially dispatched as a “suspicious circumstance.”

When officers arrived, they located a “frantic victim” who told officials he had managed to escape his residence as he and his roommate were being robbed at gunpoint.

The victim led officers to the town house where the robbery was reported, at which time “officers entered the residence and discovered a deceased victim in one of the rooms,” Brindley explained.

During their investigation, Redding police investigators spent the morning and afternoon interviewing witnesses, developing leads and gathering information that led to the three alleged suspect being “positively identified as being involved in the robbery and homicide,” according to Brindley.

Investigators also learned the suspects were possibly staying at a residence on Willis Street in Redding. The alleged suspect’s residence is located about five miles northwest from the homicide victim’s home.

At about 1 p.m. this afternoon, officials conducting surveillance of the alleged suspect’s residence spotted two people inside a vehicle leaving the alleged suspect’s home.

Officials conducted an investigatory traffic stop at the intersection of N. Market Street and Benton Drive in Redding, about two miles from the Willis Street residence.

“Two suspects were taken into custody without incident,” Brindley explained, saying, “The Redding Police Department SWAT Team served a search warrant at the Willis Street residence a short time later and a third suspect was taken into custody.”

The suspect’s names will be released at the conclusion of interviews and robbery-homicide investigator’s initial investigation, which is “still under investigation,” said Brindley, who added that “no further information will be released at this time.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident or investigation is urged to immediately contact the Redding PD officials at (530) 225-4200. Callers can refer to incident file number 17-69817 and can remain anonymous.

ORIGINAL STORY – REDDING: Officials investigating reported homicide

REDDING — Very few details have been released through Redding Police officials; however, it has been confirmed that authorities are investigating a homicide in the 1200 block of Heavenly Oak Lane near Lofty Oak Drive. The townhouse where the homicide reportedly happened is in the East Oak Estates neighborhood, east of Interstate 5 and northeast of Churn Creek Road, in South Redding.

A Redding Police Department press release this morning provided little information, only saying, “The Redding Police Department is currently investigating a major crime…(that)…occurred during the overnight hours.”

Area residents reported waking up shortly after midnight to the sight of heavily armed law enforcement officers on their normally-quiet street.

None of the shocked neighbors who spoke with media from the scene reported seeing or hearing anything out of the ordinary from the town home where the homicide reportedly occurred. Some later spoke on social media about seeing officers and SWAT members going door to door and yard to yard, but no one interviewed reported seeing anything suspicious or any possible suspects taken into custody.

During their investigation, officers cordoned off a large area around the town house where the deadly incident reportedly happened and residents in their homes were asked to remain indoors. Area residents who were not at home when officials began their investigation were temporarily not allowed into the neighborhood or able to return to their homes.

A Redding Police chaplain was summoned to the scene to help comfort several people, including a man and woman neighbors identified as the homicide victim’s parents as well as other family members.

When asked for information by a Record Searchlight reporter, the man identified as the victim’s father declined to make any comments, telling the reporter he “was still trying to process what happened.”

“No further information is being released at this time,” Redding Police Lt. Pete Brindley explained in the brief press release. “Information will be released as it becomes available.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident or investigation is urged to immediately contact the Redding PD officials at (530) 225-4200. Callers can refer to incident file number 17-69817 and can remain anonymous.
