PERRIS: Woman, 38, fatally hit crossing Ramona Expressway

CORRECTED: Due to discrepancy in Sheriff’s press release regarding date of occurrence

PERRIS — Another victim was fatally struck while crossing a busy Riverside County roadway, Monday night, Apr. 2. The deadly accident happened on Ramona Expressway west of Perris Boulevard in Perris, according to police and coroner officials.

According to sheriff’s officials the victim, identified only as a 38-year-old Perris resident, was not using a marked cross walk when she was fatally struck. Last night’s deadly accident was just the latest in a string of recent major and fatal vehicle versus pedestrian accidents in recent months.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Perris Police Station responded to reports of a vehicle that struck a pedestrian on Ramona Expressway just before 10:30 p.m., Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Marshall explained after the deadly accident.

When officials arrived they found a female pedestrian down in the roadway. The driver who struck the victim, a 32-year-old also from Perris, was at the scene as well.

Officials quickly determined the victim had sustained major injuries when she was struck and AMR medics eventually rushed the woman to Riverside University Health System’s Trauma Center in Moreno Valley. Despite life-saving measures, the victim succumbed to her injuries and she was pronounced deceased less than an hour after the collision, at 11:20 p.m.

Based on the circumstances, Perris PD’s Traffic Reconstruction Team responded and assumed the investigation. During their subsequent preliminary investigation, Traffic Team members determined the driver had been traveling eastbound on Ramona Expressway “and collided into a pedestrian, who was walking across the roadway,” said Marshall.

After hitting the pedestrian the driver remained at the scene and was reportedly cooperating with the sheriff’s investigation. “The driver did not sustain any injuries and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” said Marshall.

While Traffic Reconstruction Team members investigated the incident they called for the temporary closure of eastbound Ramona Expressway and motorists were diverted away from the scene of the fatal accident.

Perris PD’s investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed this collision and has not been interviewed is encouraged to contact Deputy Kiebach at the Perris Police Department at (951) 210-1074. Callers can refer to incident file number PE180920123 and can remain anonymous.
