Two men fatally shot at MV’s Sunnymead Park

MORENO VALLEY — Officials are investigating a double homicide after two men were fatally shot at Moreno Valley Sunnymead Park late Friday night, Aug. 17. The park where the deadly incident happened is located at 12655 Perris Blvd., between Fir Ave. and Sunnymead Blvd., just south of Stater Bros Market.

Investigators are now working to identify, locate, and interview two men who were seen running from the area in the moments after the deadly shooting. One person also later reported seeing a vehicle flee the area at a high rate of speed, but it was not immediately known if the vehicle was related to the homicides or if investigators had located that vehicle.

Deputies assigned to the Moreno Valley Police Station were dispatched to the park about 11:39 p.m., after emergency dispatchers received numerous reports of an assault with a deadly weapon and shots fired, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Walter Mendez.

911 callers reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing two Black men running east across Perris Blvd. after the shooting.

Deputies flooded into the area and found two men near the north end of the park, behind the rear of Stater Brothers Market. Both men were suffering from gunshot injuries.

While some deputies began searching the area for the two fleeing men, others remained at the scene and began investigating the fatal shooting.

Emergency medical personnel were summoned and both subjects were rushed to Riverside University Health System hospital in grave condition. Despite medical intervention both men succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased by hospital staff, according to Mendez.

Officials later identified 41-year-old, Moreno Valley resident, Tyrone Brown, as one of the two victims killed in the shooting. Officials have not publicly named the second man, pending notification of the victim’s family.

Based on the circumstances, Moreno Valley PD and Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit investigators responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Officials remained at the scene into the next morning conducting their initial on-scene investigation.

Technicians from the department’s Forensic Services Unit and other officials were later seen documenting, photographing, and collecting various items from the crime scene.

Officials investigating the double murder later collected surveillance footage from the nearby market, and are reviewing the footage to learn more about the shooting.

“This is an active investigation and no further information is available at this time,” said Mendez.
