Officials investigating after shooting victim shows up at Yreka hospital

HORNBROOK — A man is recovering and officials are investigating after the victim was reportedly shot in the Hornbrook area, early this morning, Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Sheriff’s officials are now working to determine where the shooting actually occurred and what may have led to the incident, which officials believe happened in the area of Tarpon and Moonfish drives, east of I-5 and north of Ager.

Deputies investigating the incident later said they stumbled upon an illegal marijuana grow during their investigation, but they have not yet determined if the shooting and grow operation were related.

Siskiyou County Sheriff’s deputies and Yreka Police Department responded to Fairchild Medical Center about 1:15 a.m., after receiving reports of a man seeking medical attention for gunshot wounds.

Based on the circumstances, Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

“An investigation was initiated at the locations previously visited by the victim but no one was found at the locations that could corroborate any criminal activity,” SCSO officials explained in a social media release.

During their investigation deputies learned the victim is on parole and contacted California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, who are assisting with the investigation.

“We are pleased the victim in this case appears to be recovering from his gunshot wounds but there is a lot of work that needs to be done in this case,” Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey later said of the shooting and ongoing investigation.

“Other pertinent circumstances surrounding the incident need to be further investigated,” Lopey explained.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the SCSO’s 24-hour Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information is available.
