Probationer arrested after threatening dad with loaded handgun

CITY OF SHASTA LAKE — A probationer was arrested Saturday morning, Nov. 24, after allegedly pointing a loaded handgun at his father and threatening to kill him. The alleged suspect was arrested at this father’s home on the 3600 block of Olive Street in the City of Shasta Lake.

After an investigation, deputies arrested 32-year-old Troy Allen Bennett. He was later booked into Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, possession of an assault rifle, criminal threats, possession of a high-capacity magazine, and violation of probation. A jail record search indicated Bennett remains in custody without bail.

Deputies assigned to City of Shasta Lake and other patrol deputies from the area responded to the home around 8 a.m., after SHASCOM received a report from a man reporting that his son was threatening him while brandishing a gun.

When deputies arrived they found Bennet outside his father’s home and he was detained without incident, according to SCSO officials.

During their subsequent investigation deputies learned Bennet was on felony probation for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Deputies located a loaded handgun and loaded “assault rifle” in Troy’s vehicle, said SCSO.

Based on their investigation, deputies arrested Bennet and transported him to County Jail.

There were no reported injuries related to the incident or Bennet’s arrest.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 28 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 15 – but soon to be 16 – grandchildren.
