Officials investigating after man tried to lure teen into car

MENIFEE — Authorities are investigating a suspicious incident in Menifee involving an adult male who reportedly tried to entice a 15-year-old girl into his car early Thursday evening, Nov. 29. The alleged incident happened in the busy parking lot of a shopping center near the intersection of Newport and Murrieta roads, according to officials investigating the incident.

Deputies assigned to Menifee Police Station responded to the shopping center shortly after 5 p.m., after the girl reported the suspicious person to a family member. That family member then called 911 to report the incident, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. John Burke later explained.

Deputies investigating the reported incident learned the 15-year-old victim was leaving a retail store when a man she did not know attempted to engage her in conversation. The man, who has not yet been identified, was reportedly standing next to a parked car and asked the teen if she wanted to get into his vehicle and leave with him.

Deputies searched the area for the man, who had already left the parking lot prior to their arrival, and they were not immediately able to locate or identify the subject.

Menifee PD is continuing to investigate the incident and have asked that anyone with additional information to contact Deputy Owen at (951) 210-1000. Callers can refer to incident file number ME183330084 and can remain anonymous. Citizens may also submit a tip using the Sheriff’s CrimeTips online form.

Writer’s note: Facebook’s Menifee News reported yesterday’s disturbing incident differently from how Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reported their investigation in an official press release. A request sent to RSO for clarification of the obvious discrepancies has not yet been responded to.
