Moreno Valley man, 27, killed in 2-car wreck

MORENO VALLEY — A 27-year-old Moreno Valley man died after being involved in a two-vehicle traffic collision in Moreno Valley late Wednesday evening, Jan. 23. The fatal collision happened at the intersection of Cottonwood Ave. and Lasselle St.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials later identified Joseph Peters IV as the man who died in the crash. A coroner’s release indicated Peters succumbed to his injuries about 40 minutes after the crash and was pronounced deceased at 11:18 p.m.

Deputies assigned to Moreno Valley PD, more than a dozen Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters, and other emergency personnel, responded to reports of a major-injury traffic collision shortly after 10:30 p.m. 911 callers reported four injuries, with one victim trapped inside his vehicle.

When officials arrived they found a two-vehicle collision “with several injured parties,” Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Gilbert Gonzalez explained after the deadly accident. Firefighters confirmed one of the victims, later identified as Peters, was trapped inside the mangled wreckage of his vehicle and required extrication with the “Jaws of Life.”

All four victims were eventually transported to area hospitals, including Peters, who was rushed to Riverside University Health System in Moreno Valley where, despite life-saving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries. Cal Fire later Tweeted that in addition to Peters, one victim was transported with serious injuries and two other victims were transported with injuries described as minor.

Based on the circumstances, specially trained members of Moreno Valley PD’s Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation, which is ongoing.

While deputies and other emergency personnel worked at the scene, they called for the temporary closure of the intersection, which was reopened at the conclusion of their initial on-scene investigation.

Traffic Team members have asked that anyone who witnessed the crash and has not yet provided a statement to come forward with any information that may aid in their collision investigation. Trevor has been married for more than 28 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 15 – but soon to be 16 – grandchildren.
