Child fatally run over outside SJ home

HEMET — A young boy was hit and killed outside a San Jacinto home yesterday afternoon, Monday, Feb. 11. Officials are now investigating how and why the child ended up behind the vehicle that ran him over as it backed out of the driveway at a home in the 300 block of E. Third St., near S. Jordan Ave.

A similar tragedy occurred last September in Moreno Valley when a family member driving a large commercial dump truck backed over a 2-year-old toddler who had managed to get behind the haul-away rig and was crushed to death.

Emergency first responders were first alerted to the accident about 3:45 p.m., after receiving a frantic call reporting a “vehicle versus pedestrian” traffic collision involving a juvenile, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Brett Johnson later explained.

The child sustained major injuries, according to Johnson, who said the victim was rushed to an area hospital where he succumbed to his traumatic injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

Deputies and investigators assigned to San Jacinto Police Department’s Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation into the boy’s tragic death.

“The preliminary investigation revealed an adult male was backing a vehicle from a residential driveway and collided with a male juvenile who had been on the ground near the rear of the vehicle,” explained Johnson. “The adult male remained at the scene and was cooperative during the investigation.”

Officials have not yet released the victim’s name or age, pending further investigation and San Jacinto PD’s investigation is ongoing.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 28 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 15 – but soon to be 16 – grandchildren.
