SCSO investigating man’s death, after found not breathing

HAT CREEK — Authorities are investigating the death of a man in the Hat Creek area, who was found unconscious and not breathing inside his pickup truck last night, Thursday, April 11. The victim’s truck was found parked on a logging road off Hwy 89, just south of Charlie Bone Rd.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene about 5:55 p.m., after receiving reports of a man found unconscious inside his pickup truck, described as a 1990 Nissan. A few minutes later, SHASCOM received a second 911 call reporting that the victim was not breathing and was a “blueish-purple color.”

When the first arriving medical personnel arrived at the scene several minutes later, they reported that those who had found the victim had pulled him from his truck and were attempting to perform CPR.

At 6:09 p.m., officials at the scene updated that paramedics had taken over life-saving efforts. Medics continued performing CPR, which they continued for the next 20 to 25 minutes, until determining the man had passed away. After the man’s passing, personnel at the scene requested coroner’s officials respond to the location.

A short time later, a deputy notified the victim’s family about the man’s death. Family members have since shared that the victim who passed away was Darrel Coon, 54, of Burney.

Coroner’s officials arrived at the scene around 8 p.m. and took custody of Coon’s body and a post-mortem has been scheduled.

Officials cleared the scene around 8:30 p.m., and the victim’s pickup was towed and stored for family members.

Shasta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the victim’s death and their investigation is ongoing.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 28 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 15 – but soon to be 16 – grandchildren.
