Deputies from the Norco Sheriff’s Station, along with other Cal Fire and other emergency personnel, were dispatched to the crash at 9:16 p.m., after receiving reports of a major injury traffic collision with rollover, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Gutierrez later reported.

When officials arrived at the scene, they found two wrecked vehicles including a pickup truck that was upside down and on its roof in the intersection. The vehicles were described as a Toyota Tundra and Chevy El Camino. The driver of the El Camino was trapped and unresponsive inside his heavily damaged vehicle and firefighters performed a cut and rescue operation to free the critically injured man.

Medical personnel eventually determined the driver of the El Camino had succumbed to his injuries and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials later identified Alfonso Jimenez, 44, of Norco, as the man killed in the collision. A coroner’s release indicated Jimenez was pronounced deceased less than ten minutes after the collision occurred, at 9:24 p.m.

The driver of the Toyota pickup was transported to an area hospital with injuries described as minor.

Based on the circumstances, Jurupa Valley Station’s Traffic Reconstruction Team responded and assumed the fatal collision investigation.

During their preliminary on-scene investigation, deputies determined that just before the accident the driver of the El Camino was traveling southbound on Temescal Ave. at a high rate of speed, Gutierrez explained. At the same time, the Toyota was headed westbound on Sixth St.

As the two vehicles entered the intersection, Jimenez’ El Camino struck the pickup, according to Gutierrez.

“The force of impact caused the Toyota Tundra to flip onto its roof and slide across the intersection,” Gutierrez explained. “Both vehicles came to rest on the southwest portion of the intersection into the oncoming lanes of traffic.”

The sheriff’s investigation into the deadly crash is ongoing.
