UPDATE: More details emerge after weapon-wielding man fatally shot by Elsinore deputy

UPDATED: Tuesday, Nov. 19, 3 p.m., With additional details.

LAKE ELSINORE — Authorities are investigating after a man was fatally shot by a deputy who responded to reports of a person brandishing a weapon in Lake Elsinore early Saturday evening, Nov. 16. The deadly confrontation reportedly happened outside or within close proximity to a halfway house in a residential neighborhood on the 3000 block of Ash St., northeast of Lake St. and Lakeshore Dr.

Deputies from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the area at 5:22 p.m., after receiving reports of an adult male brandishing a weapon, Riverside Sheriff’s spokesperson Deputy Robyn Flores later reported.

According to a Twitter release from the department, when deputies arrived at the location and located the suspect outside of the residence they contacted the armed man and gave him commands to drop his weapon.

“(The) suspect refused, resulting in a (deputy involved shooting),” officials reported in the social media release.

In a press release issued later, Flores further explained, “A physical altercation occurred between the suspect and the deputy resulting in a deputy involved shooting.”

The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was struck by the deputy’s gunfire, according to Flores; who did not specify what type of weapon the man was accused of brandishing.

After the shooting, deputies immediately requested fire and rescue personnel to the location and began treating the man’s gunshot injuries. They continued life-saving efforts until paramedics arrived and pronounced the man deceased at the scene.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. They were assisted by technicians from the Department’s Forensic Services Unit, who were later seen searching for, documenting, and collecting various items of evidence from where the incident occurred.

While officials investigated the deadly shooting they called for the temporary closure of Ash St., between Fig and Spruce streets and the roadway remained closed for several hours until investigators were finished processing the scene.

The deputy involved in the shooting, whose name was not released, was placed on administrative leave per Department policy.

No other citizens or deputies were injured during the altercation and the sheriff’s investigation is ongoing.
