Knife-wielding man arrested after Redding Library attack

REDDING — A man who officials say arrived in Redding from Florida in early November and has been arrested twice in the last two days was arrested again after using racial slurs while attacking a security guard and others with a knife at the Redding Library Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 19.

Redding Police Officers were dispatched to the library around 2:12 p.m., after receiving reports that a man had pulled a knife on the library security guard and was fighting with the guard and other library officials, as well as several good Samaritan’s who came to the guard’s aid, according to Redding Police Sgt. Todd Cogle.

Officers quickly arrived at the scene and found 59-year-old Gill Gideon Bond still involved in an altercation with security guard Christopher Chaidez and others who had come to Chaidez’ aid.

Despite the officers’ arrival, Bond continued struggling with the security guard, forcing officers to deploy pepper spray to halt Bond’s attack; at which time the violent man was taken into custody. 

Officers arrested 59-year-old, Gill Gideon Bond, after they say he attacked a library employee and others with a knife while using racial slurs at Redding Library.

During their subsequent investigation officers learned the violent encounter began when a library employee caught Bond consuming alcohol at the library and asked him to leave.

Bond became irate at the employee and began causing a disturbance which drew the attention of Chaidez.

During the initial confrontation, Bond allegedly used a racial slur and threatened to kill the Black employee who first confronted him.

After Chaidez intervened and asked Bond to leave the library, “Bond pulled a knife from his pocket, held it down at his side, and attempted to strike Chaidez with his free hand,” explained Cogle.

During the ensuing struggle, “Chaidez attempted to grab both of Bond’s arms to avoid being stabbed,” said Cogle. Several nearby good Samaritans came to Chaidez’ aid, “but Bond attacked them too, punching those who came close to him and threatening to kill anyone near him.”

Based on their investigation officers arrested Bond and he was booked into Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of brandishing a weapon, assault, criminal threats, resisting arrest, and a hate crime.

He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 29 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 16 grandchildren.
