REDDING — Authorities are investigating a deadly crash after two people were fatally ejected from a vehicle that lost control and careened off the ramp connecting northbound Interstate 5 with westbound Highway-44, in Redding.

CHP was first alerted to the crash around 9 a.m., after another motorist traveling on the Highway 44 connector ramp from I-5 called 911 to report spotting a car that had crashed over the side of the off-ramp and was down an embankment.

When officers and other emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found a wrecked and unoccupied, white 2009 Dodge Charger wedged between two trees down an embankment adjacent the highway.

Parts of a white Dodge Charger can be seen where the vehicle careened off the westbound Highway 44 connector ramp from northbound I-5 sometime overnight. Two victims were fatally ejected from the wrecked vehicle, which was spotted by a passing motorist around 9 a.m., Sunday morning.

Officials also soon found the lifeless bodies of a 23-year-old male driver and 28-year-old female passenger who had been ejected from the vehicle. Both had already succumbed to their injuries and were declared deceased at the scene.

Neither victim has been publicly identified, pending further investigation and notification of their families.

During their subsequent investigation, officers determined the pair killed in the crash had not been wearing their seat-belts and neither was properly restrained.

While officials worked at the scene investigating the cause of the deadly crash they called for the temporary closure of the Highway 44 west off-ramp from northbound I-5. The off-ramp remained closed until Coroner’s officials had recovered the victims’ bodies and the wrecked Charger was towed from the scene.

CHP’s investigation is ongoing and officials have asked that anyone with information about the crash or who witnessed the deadly accident and has not yet provided a statement to authorities to contact CHP – Redding Officer Steve Rauch at (530) 225-0500.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information is available.
