CHP was first alerted to the crash shortly after 9:30 a.m., when a 911 caller reported that a cattle truck had just overturned and was blocking the eastbound lane of the highway, according to a CHP incident log. About twenty minutes later, CHP’s log indicated that numerous cows were still in the overturned trailer, while other cows were wandering around the scene of the crash.

CHP’s log did not indicate if any cattle were killed in the crash.

While CHP and others worked at the scene they requested Cal-Trans respond to the scene to assist with traffic control and help corrale the cattle that were still wandering in and out of the rural, two lane highway.

At around 10 a.m., CHP requested a heavy-duty wrecker respond to the scene to assist with righting the overturned big-rig and its trailer back onto their wheels, so both could be towed from the location. Shortly after 11 a.m., officials at the crash also requested the company that was transporting the cattle to send another trailer to haul away the cows that were eventually rounded up and removed from the highway.

As of this report, CHP is contiuing to work at the scene and officials have not released any further details about their ongoing investigation into the cause of the accident.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information is available.
