Hemet pedestrian recovering after hit by pickup

HEMET — A man who was crossing a Hemet street was injured after he was struck by a pickup truck Sunday evening, Dec. 15. Although officials investigating last night’s collision have not specified if the victim was using a marked crosswalk when he was hit near the intersection of Florida Ave. and Lyon Ave., witnesses and the driver who hit the man stated the victim was attempting to cross the street away from the intersection and the nearest crosswalks.

UPDATE: Hemet pedestrian, 46, killed by hit and run driver ID’d

City of Hemet Police and Fire departments, along with AMR and other emergency personnel, were dispatched to the scene around 8:30 p.m., after several witnesses called 911 to report the crash, which happened in front of the Valero Gas Station.

A Hemet Fire Battalion Chief was first to arrive at the scene just moments after the accident was reported and updated that the victim was still down in the roadway. The Chief updated that the man, who had been using a cane while crossing the street, was conscious and alert but required medical treatment.

When officers arrived they located a black Dodge Ram with minor damage to the driver’s side headlight that had struck the pedestrian. The driver and several occupants from the vehicle remained at the scene and were cooperating with the collision investigation.

According to witnesses at the scene, the driver reportedly told investigating officers that she was driving when she “heard a thud” and realized she had hit a pedestrian who had been crossing in the middle of the road.

AMR medics treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to Riverside University Health System in Moreno Valley with moderate unspecified injuries.

Hemet PD is continuing to investigate the cause of the collision and their investigation is ongoing.
