Shotgun-wielding parolee nabbed after breaking into Shasta Lake home

CITY OF SHASTA LAKE — Reports of a man sleeping inside a car with a shotgun in his lap led to the arrest of a parolee, who officials say had broken into at least one City of Shasta Lake home the prior evening.

He was apprehended Thursday, Feb. 6, when officers caught him prowling around a second City of Shasta Lake residence while armed with a shotgun that had been stolen from the home the night before, according to officials.

Shasta County sheriff’s deputies assigned to patrol City of Shasta Lake were dispatched to the 1800 block of Shasta St., after an area resident reported seeing an unknown male subject asleep in a vehicle, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Scoma reported after the incident and arrest.

The 911 caller also told emergency dispatchers that the sleeping man had a shotgun on his lap inside the vehicle.

While deputies were responding to the area, the 911 caller updated that the man had woken up, exited the vehicle, and was last seen climbing over a fence and into the yard of a nearby residence.

The caller also reported the man was armed with the shotgun when he was seen going into the neighbor’s yard.

Marcus Williams was arrested after an eagle-eyed citizen reported seeing him asleep in a car with a shotgun in his lap. When deputies arrived they found Williams in the front yard of a home, while still armed with the shotgun; which turned out to have been stolen from another home the prior evening. SCSO photo

“When deputies arrived, they quickly located the male subject in the front yard of a residence,” explained Scoma; saying, “The male subject was still holding the shotgun when deputies contacted him.”

When confronted by deputies, the shotgun-wielding felon, who was later identified as Marcus Steven Williams, 25, of Redding, complied with the deputies’ orders to drop his weapon and he was detained for further investigation.

A subsequent records check revealed Williams was on CDCR parole for a prior burglary conviction.

As their investigation was continuing, deputies learned of the prior evening’s burglary. During that burglary, a 20 gauge, Remington 870 shotgun was stolen from the residence, according to Scoma.

Further inspection of the shotgun WIlliams was holding when deputies arrived revealed it was loaded and was the weapon reported stolen during the prior evening’s burglary.

When deputies contacted the victim of that burglary, the homeowner was able to identify the shotgun as property that was stolen from their home. The victim also identified a vehicle key fob and key ring which had been stolen during the burglary. Both had been in Williams’ possession when he was apprehended.

Based on their investigation, deputies arrested Williams and transported him to Shasta County Jail in Redding where he was booked on suspicion of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. He was also booked for possession of stolen property with a value greater than $950.

The sheriff’s investigation is ongoing and officials have asked that anyone with information about this incident or Williams’ alleged criminal activities contact Shasta County Sheriff’s City of Shasta Lake Division at (530) 245-6025. Callers can refer to incident file number 20S004139 and can remain anonymous.
