Teen on ATV dies after running red light, hit by pickup

JURUPA VALLEY — Authorities say a 16-year-old boy riding an ATV was killed when he ran a red light and was struck by a pickup truck in Jurupa Valley yesterday afternoon, March 4. The fatal accident happened at the intersection of Rubidoux Blvd. and Market St.

Deputies from the Jurupa Valley Station and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene about 4:57 p.m., after receiving reports of a traffic collision involving an ATV rider and pickup truck, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Gutierrez later reported after Wednesday’s deadly accident.

When officials arrived, deputies found the juvenile down in the roadway on Rubidoux Blvd. The boy, who has since been identified as Alexander Bastida, 16, of Riverside, sustained major injuries and passed away at the scene. A coroner’s release indicated Bastida was pronounced deceased at 5:10 p.m.

Based on the circumstances, members of the Jurupa Valley Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation.

During their subsequent investigation, deputies determined Bastida was riding an ATV eastbound on Market St. just before the fatal crash.

As the teen approached a red stop light at Rubidoux Blvd., he failed to stop and continued into the intersection, where his ATV was struck by a northbound vehicle Gutierrez described as a “heavy-duty pick-up truck.”

The driver of the truck remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation, according to Gutierrez.

While deputies worked at the scene, Rubidoux Blvd. was closed in both directions. The closure remained in affect for several hours.

He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 29 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 16 grandchildren.
