Redding dinner brawl leads to shots fired, father arrested

REDDING — Authorities say a dinner-time brawl between a father and son led to the father’s arrest after the man, a convicted felon, pulled a gun and fired numerous rounds at his son Friday evening, March 20. The son was uninjured during the violent confrontation, which happened at a private residence on the 1700 block of Henry Ave., in Redding.

Officers from the Redding Police Department responded to the residence at 8:48 p.m., after receiving multiple reports of several gunshots heard in the area, Redding Police Sgt. Paul Slagle reported after the incident and arrest.

When officers arrived at the residence, they found signs of a violent struggle and located 57-year-old, Alonzo Shoulders, of Redding, suffering from numerous facial injuries.

Alonzo Shoulders, 57, of Redding, was arrested last night after a dinner-time fight with his son led to shots fired inside a Redding home.

During their subsequent investigation, officers interviewed witnesses to the shooting and learned that Alonzo and his son, Michael Shoulders, 32, of Cottonwood, began arguing during a family dinner.

As the argument escalated, the father and son “engaged in a physical altercation,” according to Slagle; who said that during the violent encounter “Alonzo retrieved a handgun from a bedroom within the residence before he fired the revolver several times towards his son, Michael.”

The confrontation ended when Michael, who was uninjured during the altercation, was able to wrestle the firearm from his father and flee the area in a vehicle, according to Slagle.

Based on their investigation, officers arrested Alonzo.

The father was transported to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries before he was booked into the Shasta County Jail on suspicion of attempt homicide, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, domestic battery, and negligent discharge of a firearm.

Online jail records indicate he has since been released from custody.

Trevor has been married for more than 29 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 16 grandchildren.
