Officials investigating in-custody death at RivCo jail

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Saying they have found no signs of foul play, authorities yesterday confirmed they are investigating the in-custody death of an inmate who passed away after being found unresponsive in his cell at Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

Despite life-saving efforts by deputies and jail staff and being transported to an area hospital for further treatment, the inmate never regained consciousness and was declared deceased by hospital staff Thursday evening, June 18.

Deputies assigned to the facility were called to the cell of an unresponsive male adult inmate around 9 p.m., Riverside Sheriff’s Cpt. Daniel Anne said in a written press release after the man’s death.

“Custody staff and jail medical staff administered life-saving measures and the inmate was transported, via ambulance, to a local hospital for continued medical attention,” explained Anne, without specifying any details of how the man died or what may have led to his passing.

“The inmate never recovered and was pronounced deceased a short while later at the hospital,” the Cpt. continued.

After the inmate’s passing investigators from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to the jail facility and assumed the death investigation.

“The cause of death will later be determined by the Coroner’s Bureau,” explained Anne; saying, “The identification of the victim will not be released at this time pending notification to the family.”

Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, no further information was released.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to call Investigator Patrick of the Jurupa Valley Station at (951) 955-2600. Callers can refer to incident file number RC201700004 and can remain anonymous.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information is available.
