TEMECULA, Calif. — An Iowa man who allegedly carjacked the vehicle of a good Samaritan who tried to help him after a single-vehicle crash in unincorporated Temecula Saturday afternoon, Aug. 1 was arrested the next day while trying to re-enter the United States after having fled to Tijuana, according to officials.

The crash that led to the carjacking happened near the intersection of Highway 79 and Sage Rd., about halfway between the city of Temecula and unincorporated community of Aguanga.

Deputies from the Southwest Sheriff’s Station responded to the scene at 3:26 p.m., after receiving reports of a carjacking, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Sean Liebrand has since said of the incident and arrest.

Responding deputies learned the victim had stopped at the intersection to help the alleged carjacker, who has since been identified as 29-year-old, Iowa resident, Marcus Dale Sidney, after he was involved in a solo-vehicle crash.

“While waiting for the California Highway Patrol to arrive, the suspect got into the victim’s vehicle and began to flee the area,” explained Liebrand.

The victim sustained minor injuries during the carjacking and was hospitalized for treatment of unspecified injuries.

During their subsequent investigation, deputies learned Sidney had fled across the border to Tijuana, Mexico.

The next day, on Sunday, Aug. 2, the suspect was detained while attempting to re-enter the United States from Mexico. He was later arrested by deputies and transported to Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta where he was booked on suspicion of carjacking.

Online jail records indicate Sidney remains in custody in lieu of $120,000 bail or bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at Murrieta’s Southwest Justice Center tomorrow, Aug. 5.

Liebrand did not specify if the victim was able to get their vehicle back or if the good Samaritan who had tried to help the victim was still hospitalized and receiving treatment for the injuries sustained during the carjacking.

The sheriff’s investigation is ongoing and no further details have been released.
