INDIO, Calif. — Officials searching for a missing Indio man, who was last heard from on Sept. 22 after sending a series of text messages to family members “that sounded like he was distraught”, sadly announced on Friday that the man’s deceased body was discovered in Imperial County.
According to the US Border Patrol Search & Rescue Helicopter Unit, Mendivel was found in an open desert area around 10:30 a.m., northwest of the cities of Brawley and Westmorland.

Indio Police Department began searching for Jessie Mendivel, 33, of Indio, after he was reported missing by his aunt. At the time of his disappearance, the aunt told investigating officers that Mendivel had sent her a series of text messages that indicated he may have been distraught.
In a Sept. 30 social media post, Indio PD described Mendivel’s disappearance as “suspicious” and described the missing man as a Hispanic male, about 5-foot-9, weighing approximately 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes
Although Indio PD had previously said that based on the text messages the missing man had sent, that foul play was suspected in his disappearance, officials have not yet said if foul play was still suspected in the man’s disappearance and subsequent death.
The Imperial County Sheriffs Office will be handling the unattended death part of the investigation, which is ongoing.
