City of Temecula Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to the scene at 7:18 a.m., after receiving reports of a major-injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and bicyclist, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Joseph Greco reported this afternoon.
Deputies and other emergency personnel began arriving within minutes where they found an unresponsive elderly man down in the roadway near a bicycle. The vehicle that struck the bicyclist was found nearby, along with its driver who remained at the scene.
The bicyclist, who had not been wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, was found to have critical head, neck and other injuries.
After treating him at the scene, AMR medics rushed the man to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar. Despite life-saving efforts and being placed on life-support, the victim passed away in the Intensive Care Unit the following day.
A Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s release has since identified the victim as Kenrick “Ken” Skinner, 82, of Murrieta. The coroner’s release indicated Skinner was declared deceased by hospital staff at 4 p.m.
Based on the circumstances, members of the Southwest Sheriff Station’s Traffic Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
“The preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a gray Toyota Corolla was traveling eastbound on Margarita Rd. when the bicyclist crossed into oncoming traffic,” Greco explained; adding that the driver of the vehicle was unable to stop in time and collided into Skinner and his bicycle.
During their investigation, Margarita Rd. was closed between Stonewood and Moraga roads for several hours.
