Violent Anderson incident leads to carjack and kidnap charges

UPDATED: Tuesday, Nov. 24, 11 a.m., With additional details from victim.

ANDERSON, Calif. — Authorities say a “heavily intoxicated” felon on probation was arrested after allegedly beating his girlfriend and then taking her car – with her five-year-old son inside it – during a roadside incident Friday evening, Nov. 20.

Although responding Anderson police officers quickly located the victim’s vehicle in the Loop Street area, the suspect refused to comply with officers’ orders and was eventually taken into custody with assistance from a police K9.

The victim’s young son was found safe and unharmed in the car and was later returned to his mother, according to Anderson Police Department.

Friday’s incident began around 7:30 p.m., when City of Anderson officers were dispatched to reports of a beaten and bloodied woman trying to flag down passing motorists in the roadway on North Street, according to an Anderson PD social media release.

“Officers responded to the scene and contacted the woman who had visible wounds from a recent assault,” officials explained.

The victim told officers her boyfriend, Michael Galindo, 28, of Stockton, had punched her multiple times while she was driving her vehicle northbound on I-5.

Michael Galindo was arrested after allegedly beating his girlfriend and taking her car during a violent encounter on Interstate 5 Friday evening. The victim’s five-year-old son, who was in the car when Galindo took it, was later safely recovered and returned to his mother after officers deployed K9 “Ivan” to take the felon into custody.

“The victim advised officers she pulled off the freeway to escape from Galindo and when she did so, Galindo got into the drivers seat and drove away in her vehicle,” officials described; adding, “The victim’s five-year-old son, whom Galindo is not the father of, was still in the vehicle.”

Officers soon spotted the victim’s vehicle in the Loop Street area and blocked it in, initiating a high-risk traffic stop. However, despite officers’ orders for Galindo to exit the vehicle he refused, and began shouting profanities at them.

Although Anderson PD’s K9 “Ivan” was on scene and ready to assist in Galindo’s apprehension, officers held him back due to Galindo remaining inside the vehicle with the victim’s son.

As Galindo continued to fail to comply with officers, he suddenly exited the vehicle and turned his body away from officers.

“As he did so he dropped his hands towards his front waistband,” said officials.

Not knowing if Galindo was reaching for a weapon or what his intentions were, officers deployed Ivan, who quickly took Galindo to the ground.

“Galindo continued to resist but was quickly brought under control and detained into handcuffs,” officials described.

Once Galindo was in custody, officers checked the vehicle and found the victim’s son safe and unharmed.

“The juvenile was safely returned to the victim,” said officials.

Galindo was found to be on Post Release Community Supervision for being a felon in possession of a firearm and was also found to be heavily intoxicated.

He was treated at a local hospital for his bite wounds and then booked into Shasta County Jail on suspicion of kidnapping, domestic violence, carjacking, child endangerment, DUI, resisting arrest, and violation of probation.

Online records indicate Galindo is no longer in custody at the Shasta County Jail and may have already been released to another county or agency on other, unrelated charges.

The victim of this incident, Shanae Culpepper, later refuted police accounts of Friday night’s incident, telling SCNS, “The incident was not a carjack, or a kidnap.”

“He was very drunk. He consumed a very large bottle of grey goose bottle all by himself …and… things got out of hand, but Michael would never hurt our son,” Culpepper said; adding, “Our son might not be biologically his, but Michael is his father and would never harm him.”

“People make mistakes. This behavior is not in Michael’s usual nature. He is usually a very loving, caring, kind and funny man,” Culpepper continued; saying she has already contacted the District Attorney’s office hoping to get some of Galindo’s charges removed or at least reduced.

“Drinking and driving is not ok, but that is the only and main offense here,” Culpepper, who is pregnant and due in early March/late February, went on to tell SCNS; adding, “This was all unintentional and I need my fiancé home. The kids need him home.”
