San Bernardino PD officers fatally shoot man armed with large knife

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Authorities say a San Bernardino man who was threatening family members with a large kitchen knife was fatally shot when he failed to comply with responding officers and charged at them while still armed with the knife Friday evening, Nov. 27.

City of San Bernardino police officers were dispatched to a private residence on the 2300 block of W. Adams Street around 11:39 p.m., after terrified family members called 911 to report a family member was armed with a large kitchen knife and was threatening to stab other family members at the home, San Bernardino Police Sgt. J. King has since said of the fatal incident.

While officers were responding to the scene family members, who had locked themselves in their bedrooms fearing for their safety, told emergency dispatchers that 27-year-old Nicolas Segura “was possibly under the influence of methamphetamine and creating a large disturbance.”

When officers arrived at the home they found Segura in the driveway still armed with the knife, according to King.

“Officers communicated with Segura and attempted to de-escalate the situation,” the Sergeant described.

Segura reportedly refused to comply with all commands given by the officers and he charged at them while still armed with the knife, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred.

After being shot, Segura was taken to a local hospital for multiple gunshot injuries; however, despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

Body-worn camera footage since released by the agency showed Segura armed with the knife officers say he charged at them with. Footage also showed Segura appearing to hold the knife over his head while charging at the officer(s) who opened fire.

No one else was injured as a result of the violent incident and officers later recovered a large kitchen knife at the scene which was collected as evidence.

Officials are continuing to investigate the deadly shooting and have said no further information could be released pending further investigation.
