CHP and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene around 7 a.m., after the major-injury accident was reported.

When officials arrived they found two heavily damaged vehicles, including a sedan and pickup truck, with vehicle parts and debris scattered throughout the roadway.

A woman who had been driving the sedan sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for further treatment. However, despite life-saving efforts the woman succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

Shasta County Chief Deputy Coroner Lieutenant Stonehouse has since identified the woman as 56-year-old, Betsy Lynn Carver, of Palo Cedro.

“The decedent’s next-of-kin has been notified and the postmortem examination will be
scheduled,” said Stonehouse.

The driver of the pickup sustained minor injuries, according to CHP. It was not immediately known if the man was hospitalized.

During their subsequent investigation, CHP determined Carver had swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting the pickup truck head-on.

The accident caused significant delays on Deschutes Road, while officials investigated the cause of the collision and removed the two vehicles and other debris from the roadway.

At the time of this report, CHP was still working to determine why Carver swerved into oncoming traffic, and had not yet determined if intoxication, distracted driving, or a medical crisis may have led to the collision.

Their investigation is ongoing.
