Human remains discovered near Cottonwood, investigation continuing
COTTONWOOD, Calif. — Authorities today confirmed they are continuing their investigation after human remains were discovered in an unincorporated area just outside Cottonwood’s city limits, in Shasta County last week.
The remains were found in the area of Cottonwood Creek near the Interstate 5 overpass, Saturday, Jan. 23, according to officials.

As their investigation was continuing, Shasta County sheriff’s deputies and coroner officials, along with members of California State University-Chico’s Anthropology Department returned to the area yesterday, Jan. 26, to conduct a more thorough search for remains, according to Shasta County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Coroner Lieutenant Stonehouse.
“At this time, the decedent is unidentified and no further information is available,” said the Lieutenant.
This case remains under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to contact SHASCOM at (530) 245-6500, or the Shasta County Coroner’s Office at (530) 225-5551. Callers can refer to coroner’s report number 2021-0090 and can remain anonymous.

Trevor spent 10 years in the U.S. Army as an Orthopedic Specialist before joining the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in 1998. During his time with the sheriff’s department, Trevor worked at several different stations; including Robert Presley Detention Center, Southwest Station in Temecula, Hemet/Valle Vista Station, Ben Clark Public Safety Training Center, and Lake Elsinore Station; along with other locations.
Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.
Trevor has been married for more than 30 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 18 grandchildren.
