UPDATE: Victims, 86 and 35, ID’d after crash that seriously injured Sheriff’s CSO and volunteer

JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. — Authorities have identified two women killed when an Amazon delivery van plowed into the scene of a non-injury accident being investigated in Jurupa Valley Saturday evening, Feb. 27.

The deadly crash, which happened at the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and 56th Street, also seriously injured a Riverside County Sheriff Department Community Service Officer and a Sheriff’s volunteer, who were both hospitalized with major injuries. Both are expected to survive, according to officials.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials have since identified Ailene Beazley, 86, of Valley Center, and Monica Lopez, 35, of Riverside, as the women killed in the collision. Both women were pronounced deceased at the scene at 6:41 p.m.

Although CHP has not yet provided any updates to their ongoing investigation, at the time of the accident neither drug or alcohol impairment were believed to be factors in the collision. However, distracted driving had not been ruled out.

CHP’s investigation is active and ongoing and no further details have been released.

JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. – Authorities say two citizens were killed and two Sheriff’s officials sustained major injuries after a delivery van plowed into a patrol vehicle parked at the scene of an earlier reported vehicle accident in Jurupa Valley Saturday evening, Feb. 27. The deadly crash happened at the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and 56th Street.

At around 6 p.m., a Riverside County Sheriff’s Community Service Officer (CSO) and Sheriff’s volunteer responded to the intersection to conduct a non-injury traffic collision investigation, CHP Officer Juan Quintero reported last night. 

The CSO and volunteer, whose names have not been released, parked their fully marked Sheriff’s patrol vehicle, a Ford Explorer, with its emergency lights activated, in a position behind the two involved vehicles in the number one, southbound lane of Van Buren Boulevard, “to protect the scene for the duration of the scene investigation,” Quintero explained.

At around 6:30 p.m., as the collision investigation was continuing and the two Sheriff’s personnel and two drivers of the initial collision were standing outside their vehicles, an Amazon Prime Ford Transit delivery van that had been traveling southbound on Van Buren Boulevard failed to see or slow down for the accident scene and plowed into the parked and unoccupied patrol vehicle.

The tremendous impact of the collision thrust the patrol vehicle in a southerly direction, where it then struck the two vehicles involved in the initial collision, as well as the CSO, Sheriff’s volunteer, and both drivers of the earlier reported accident.

When CHP, Cal Fire-Riverside, additional Sheriff’s personnel, and other emergency responders arrived at the scene they found the four victims down in the roadway suffering from injuries ranging from major to critical.

Despite life-saving efforts, both citizens involved in the initially reported collision passed away.

“Both sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced at the scene,” described Quintero.

Neither victims’ names have been released pending notification of their families.

Both the CSO and volunteer were rushed to an area hospital for treatment of major traumatic injuries, according to Quintero; who said both are expected to survive their injuries.

The driver of the Amazon delivery van was also transported to a local hospital with complaints of pain.

Neither drug or alcohol impairment are believed to be factors in the collision; however, distracted driving has not been ruled out.

CHP’s investigation is active and ongoing and no further details have been released.
