California Highway Patrol and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene around 5:40 p.m. after receiving reports of the two-vehicle crash.
When officials arrived they found two wrecked vehicles, which were later described as a passenger sedan a Toyota pickup truck.
CHP has since confirmed that two people inside the passenger vehicle died in the crash, while the driver of the pickup truck was uninjured.
The victims’ names have not been released pending further investigation and notification of the pair’s families.

During their subsequent investigation, CHP determined the vehicle driven by the deceased victims was traveling eastbound on Hwy 44 when they lost control on a curve, spun out into the oncoming lane of traffic, and smashed into the oncoming Toyota.
Although CHP’s investigation is continuing, officials have said that drug and/or alcohol intoxication were not believed to be contributing factors in the deadly crash.
This is a developing story that will be updated as new information becomes available.
