Six injured, woman killed, in two-vehicle Riverside crash

RIVERSIDE, Calif., — Six people were injured and a woman was killed in a two-vehicle traffic collision in Riverside Thursday morning, Nov. 11.

Early reports from the scene indicated that at least one child who suffered serious head trauma was injured in the deadly crash, which happened on the transition road from the eastbound SR-60 to southbound I-215 Moreno Valley interchange, according to California Highway Patrol.

CHP – Riverside and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of the crash around 7 a.m., CHP Officer Juan Quintero reported this morning.

When officials arrived, they found two involved vehicles described as a white Toyota Sienna and Isuzu Box Truck within the lanes of travel along the transition road’s number one lane.

Firefighters discovered a total of seven occupants inside the heavily damaged Toyota, which was left nearly unrecognizable by the deadly collision. The driver and sole occupant of the box truck was found uninjured.

Firefighters and paramedics immediately began providing medical aid to the injured Toyota occupants while extricating them from the wrecked minivan. Firefighters ultimately had to cut off the minivan’s entire roof to gain access to all the injured victims.

Despite life-saving efforts, one of the occupants succumbed to her injuries and passed away at the scene.

The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has since identified Lorena Negrete, 34, of Ontario, as the woman killed in the collision. A Coroner’s release indicated she was pronounced deceased at 7:21 a.m.

All six other occupants from the Toyota were transported to local hospitals for treatment of their unspecified, but significant injuries.

During their subsequent investigation, CHP determined that just before the deadly collision the Toyota had been traveling in the number two lane of the transition road, while the box truck was traveling the same direction, to the left of the minivan, in the number one lane.

“For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Sienna steered his vehicle to the left, directly in the path of the
box truck,” Quintero explained; saying, “The driver of the box truck could not take any safe evasive action, before the right front of the box truck collided with the left rear of the Sienna.”

The force of the collision caused the Toyota to spin out of control, and the minivan careened off the roadway where it smashed broadside into a collapsible guardrail, causing the victim’s fatal injuries.

Intoxication has been ruled out as a possible contributing factor according to Quintero, who said CHP’s investigation is continuing.
