City of Redding police and fire personnel were dispatched to the scene around 6:10 a.m. after a driver called 911 to report he had struck a pedestrian, Redding Police Sergeant Michael DiMatteo has since said of the major injury collision.

When officials arrived, they found an adult male down in the intersection of the roadway with major injuries, according to DiMatteo, who said, “The unidentified pedestrian was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for treatment.”

Based on the circumstances, members of the Redding Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

Their preliminary investigation revealed that just before being struck, the pedestrian was walking eastbound across SR-273 at the intersection of South Bonnyview, wearing all dark clothing.

“A Dodge sedan traveling northbound on SR-273, driven by a 39-year-old male of Anderson, suddenly observed the pedestrian in the roadway and attempted to swerve, but was not able to avoid the pedestrian in the roadway,” DiMatteo explained.

Drug and/or alcohol intoxication have been ruled out as contributing factors and Redding PD’s investigation is continuing.
