Shoplifting Suspect Who Attacked Deputy While Being Arrested Had Brass Knuckles And a Felony Warrant

San Jacinto, Calif., On October 22, 2015, a woman was arrested at a San Jacinto Walmart after kicking and spitting on a sheriff’s deputy, during a shoplifting investigation. The woman was later discovered to have a felony warrant and she was in possession of brass knuckles, a felony in California.

At about 3:44 p.m., a deputy from the Riverside County Sheriff’s San Jacinto Police Station was dispatched to Walmart, located in the 1800 block of South San Jacinto Avenue. The deputy was sent to the store regarding a theft that had occurred at the location.

Upon arrival at the location, the deputy contacted 21-year-old Shelly Roundtree, who was being detained by Walmart loss prevention personnel. Walmart’s loss prevention department identified Roundtree as a theft suspect and provided evidence and statements regarding Roundtree’s theft from the store.

Based on evidence gathered at the Walmart, the deputy arrested Roundtree. While the deputy was walking Roundtree to a waiting patrol unit, Roundtree attacked him; first kicking him and then spitting on him.

A later search of Roundtree revealed she was in possession of brass knuckles.  A records check showed Roundtree had a felony warrant  for attempted vehicle theft, and she was on felony probation.

Roundtree was later booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility for the felony warrant and additional charges of petty theft, battery of a peace officer, possession of metal knuckles, resisting arrest with force, and probation violation.
