SAN JACINTO – Two people were killed and two others were injured in a fatal, head-on traffic collision on Gilman Springs Road on Friday, March 25. The accident occurred in an unincorporated area North of San Jacinto, according to Jennifer Fuhrman, public information officer for Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

California Highway Patrol officers and other emergency first responders rushed to the scene of the deadly collision, shortly before 10 p.m., after emergency dispatchers received numerous 911 calls about the accident.

Upon arrival officers and firefighters found the mangled remains of the two vehicles, described as a Honda and a Toyota Rav 4.

Two people, who have not yet been identified pending notification of their families, succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The damage to at least one of the vehicles was so severe it required firefighters to perform a cut and rescue operation, to free the injured victims and recover the bodies of the deceased, according to Furhman.

Paramedics treated the two surviving victims and later transported them to a local hospital. One victim reportedly sustained major injuries, the other suffered moderate injuries, Furhman wrote in a written press release.

At 11:06 p.m., firefighters updated that Gilman Springs Road would remain closed for several hours.

A video of the incident shared to the Facebook page Moreno Valley Matters, (which can be seen below,) showed a vehicle drift into the oncoming lanes of traffic on a sweeping right curve before smashing head-on into a vehicle travelling the opposite direction. It did not appear as though the driver of the vehicle that drifted out of it’s lane of traffic applied their brakes prior to the devastating impact.

No further information was available regarding the condition of the surviving victims or the cause of the accident, which is under investigation by CHP officials from the San Gorgonio Office. Anyone who witnessed this accident is encouraged to contact CHP officials at (951) 769-2000. Callers can remain anonymous.
