MORENO VALLEY – A man was arrested after he allegedly fatally shot another man Wednesday, May 11, according to sheriff’s officials. The fatal shooting occurred in the 23000 block of Bay Avenue, Moreno Valley.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Moreno Valley Police Station and other emergency first responders were dispatched to the shooting at 6:41 p.m.

Following an investigation, Chauncey Crowder, 38, was identified and arrested. He was later charged with murder, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Wallace Clear explained in a press release from the department.

“Neither the victim nor the suspect in this incident resided on Bay Avenue. Their relationship to the residents and their purpose for being there is still under investigation,” Clear wrote.

The first deputy arrived at the scene of the shooting within two minutes of receiving the 911 call. The deputy found one male victim inside the residence suffering from multiple, life-threatening, gunshot wounds.

Firefighters and paramedics treated the victim at the residence before they transported him to an area hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts by hospital staff, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

During their initial investigation deputies on-scene where the shooting occurred on Bay Avenue obtained a physical description of a black, male, adult in his 30’s who fled the residence on foot.

Deputies converged on the area and began searching for the described suspect. During their search of the neighborhood, a deputy spotted a subject matching the alleged suspect’s description on the 23000 block of Dome Street. Deputies detained him without incident.

The man, who was identified as Crowder, was positively identified by witnesses as the person who had shot the unidentified victim. During their search, deputies located a handgun believed to be the weapon used in the fatal shooting incident. It was found a short distance away from where the shooting occurred on Bay Avenue.

Investigators from the Moreno Valley Police Department and the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

Based on witness statements and evidence collected at the scene, investigators arrested Crowder for murder. He was transported to the Robert Presley Detention Center where he was booked for one count of murder. His bail was initially set at one million dollars. However, a records search revealed he was being held without bail.
