Firefighters fight blaze at Ben Clark Training Center

RIVERSIDE – CAL FIRE/Riverside County firefighters had to fight a structure fire at the Ben Clark Public Safety Training Center – a place where they are more accustomed to training how to fight fires at – Saturday, Oct. 22.

The training facility, which is run by the Riverside Sheriff’s Department, provides law enforcement, fire, and correctional based public safety training courses. It is located in the 16000 block of Davis Avenue, in the unincorporated area of Riverside.

Firefighters were first alerted to the fire at 1:55 p.m.

“The first arriving engine company reported a fourteen foot by thirty foot training building with light smoke showing and a confirmed working fire,” CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Public Information Officer April Newman explained in a release about the fire.

17 firefighters from four engine companies were sent to knock down the fire. They were assisted by a water tender and a Breathing Support Unit.

Firefighters contained the fire at 2:40 p.m., according to Newman. Resources remained at the scene for about an hour.

Trevor Montgomery spent 10 years in the U.S. Army as an Orthopedic Specialist before joining the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in 1998. He was medically retired after losing his leg in an off-duty accident.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, Personnel and Background Investigations and he finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator.

Trevor has been married for more than 26 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and has 13 children and 12 – soon to be 13 – grandchildren.
