EAST HEMET: Man dies after crashing small scooter

EAST HEMET – A man died after he crashed while riding a small, lawnmower-engine powered scooter Feb. 9. The fatal accident happened in the area of Girard Street and Poppy Drive in the unincorporated area of East Hemet.
California Highway Patrol officers, Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters, and AMR medics responded to the scene of the deadly wreck about 1:20 p.m., after the accident was reported to emergency dispatchers.
When emergency first responders arrived at scene they found the victim, who witnesses described as a white male adult, suffering from major, traumatic head injuries. The man had not been wearing a helmet when the accident happened.
The victim was not breathing and firefighter/paramedics immediately began CPR and other life-saving efforts; however, the man succumbed to his injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have not provided further information about the victim, pending notification of his family.

While firefighters treated the victim, CHP officials conducted an investigation into the fatal accident.
“A gentleman on a homemade motorized bike was travelling westbound on Poppy,” when the accident happened, according to a CHP officer at the scene.
“The victim was travelling “at an undetermined rate of speed;” however, “witnesses say he was going pretty fast,” the officer explained.
The rider ran a stop sign at the intersection before he collided with a raised curb, according to the officer. The impact caused the rider to be “ejected head-first into the bushes.”
Alcohol and/or drug intoxication had not been ruled out as contributing factors in the crash, pending a coroner’s investigation and toxicology reports.
CHP officers and Riverside County firefighters were still at the scene of the accident at 2:30 p.m., awaiting the arrival of coroner’s officials.
The accident investigation is active and ongoing.
