RIVERSIDE: Pedestrian hit by truck in “grave condition”

RIVERSIDE – A pedestrian suffered severe injuries when he was hit by a truck while trying to cross a busy Riverside street Sunday, April 2. The vehicle versus pedestrian accident happened on Market Street just south of University Avenue.

The pedestrian, who has not been identified, sustained major traumatic injuries. He was transported to Riverside Community Hospital where he was listed in “grave condition.”

Riverside Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to the accident about 1:37 p.m., after City of Riverside emergency dispatchers received multiple calls from other motorists and witnesses who called 911 to report the accident.

Officials arrived at the scene within minutes and located the pedestrian in the roadway. They also located a 2001 Dodge pickup truck and the driver, identified only as a a 59-year-old Riverside resident.

Paramedics provided life-saving measures to the victim at the scene before medics rushed him to Riverside Community Hospital.

The driver of the truck, who remained at the scene of the accident and was cooperating with officers in their investigation, was not injured.

The Riverside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded and assumed the investigation.

During their initial investigation, officials determined the victim was struck while he was crossing from the east side to the west side of Market Street.

The victim was “outside of the cross walk and (crossing) against the ‘don’t walk’ signal,” according to officials.

The Dodge was being driven southbound at 25 to 30 m.p.h., when the victim tried crossing the street – directly into the path of the oncoming truck.

“The truck attempted to stop but was unable to and struck the pedestrian,” officials said.

Officials did not specify if alcohol or drug intoxication were believed to be contributing factors in the accident.

Portions of Market Street were temporarily closed while officers investigated the collision. Their investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this collision or who witnessed the accident is urged to call Riverside Police Traffic Detective F. Soria at (951) 826-8720. Callers can remain anonymous.
