BEAUMONT: Officers fatally shoot man armed with handgun during domestic violence call

BEAUMONT — A man armed with a handgun was fatally shot during a domestic violence-related investigation, Saturday, Sept 2. The deadly shooting happened at a private residence in the 1400 block of Playa Street, south of E. 1st Street and north of Potrero Boulevard, in Beaumont.

The incident began about 5 p.m., when City of Beaumont emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from a person reporting “an in-progress, domestic violence incident,” Riverside Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Sergeant Christopher Willison explained in a press release after the deadly shooting.

“As officers responded to the residence, they received information regarding a male adult who was involved in the incident and was in possession of a weapon,” said Willison. When Beaumont police officers arrived at the home they located a man inside the residence “who was armed with a handgun.”

During the incident, “The suspect pointed the handgun toward the officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” said Willison.

Officers at the scene immediately called for paramedics and began life-saving measures on the mortally wounded suspect until paramedics arrived.

When paramedics arrived at the scene they took over attempting to save the man’s life; “but the suspect ultimately succumbed to his injuries.,” according to Willison.

Officials have not yet released the suspect’s name, pending further investigation and notification of the man’s family.

After the deadly shooting, Beaumont police officials requested that the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department conduct an independent investigation of the incident. Based on their request, investigators from the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

The involved officers, who will not be identified at this time, have been placed on administrative leave per Beaumont Police Department’s policy and the officers involved in the fatal, officer-involved shooting, according to Willison.
