MORENO VALLEY: Pedestrian crossing street killed when struck by vehicle

MORENO VALLEY — A pedestrian was killed while crossing a Moreno Valley street, Monday evening, Oct. 9. The deadly accident happened at the intersection of Iris Avenue and Camino Flores.

Moreno Valley Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to the accident about 8:23 p.m., when Riverside County emergency dispatchers were notified regarding “a major injury traffic collision,” at the intersection, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Jaime Hernandez explained in a press release after the fatal collision.

Police and Fire officials arrived at the scene within three minutes of the dispatched call and discovered a vehicle had struck a pedestrian who had been crossing the street. Officials did not specify if the victim was struck while using a marked cross walk or if the man had been jaywalking when he was hit.

“The pedestrian suffered multiple traumatic injuries and succumbed to his injuries at the scene,” Hernandez explained.

The victim’s name has not been released pending further investigation and notification of his family.

“At this time it does not appear alcohol or drugs contributed to this collision,” said Hernandez.

Based on the circumstances, members of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Moreno Valley PD Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

While officials conducted their investigation, they called for the temporary closure of all lanes of Iris Avenue, between Lasselle Street and Camino Flores. The roadway remained closed until about 2 a.m.

The investigation into the deadly crash is active and ongoing.
