REDDING: Two arrested after downtown fight, stabbing

REDDING — Authorities arrested a man they allege stabbed another man during a melee involving multiple people in downtown Redding, Saturday afternoon, Mar. 3. Another man involved in the fight, but not the stabbing, was also arrested. The victim stabbed by the alleged suspect was hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery.

According to officials, citizens who witnessed the incident were “instrumental” in quickly identifying the alleged suspects leading to their arrests. Saying, “This investigation serves as another example of how citizens and the Redding Police Department can work together to solve major crimes,” Redding Police Corporal Brian Torum explained after the incident and arrest.

After an investigation officers arrested Jamey Michael Walsh, 33, of Redding, and he was booked at Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon as well as two counts of violation of probation.

Walsh was arrested by Redding PD in January on a charge of vehicle theft after he had been featured by Redding PD and Shasta County Sheriff’s Department as one of Shasta’s Most Wanted.

Redding PD was dispatched to the area of Trinity and Center Streets just before 3 p.m., after several citizens called 911 to report a fight between multiple people and a stabbing to SHASCOM emergency dispatchers.

Numerous officers converged on the area and located a man bleeding from a stab wound to the arm. “Officers learned that an altercation took place between several subjects in the area,” Torum explained. “The altercation turned physical which ultimately led to a suspect retrieving a knife and stabbing Hammond.”

While officials gathered information from the victim, other officers searched the area for those described by witnesses as having been involved in the incident. Officers located several people allegedly involved in the fight as they fled from the area on foot.

“With the assistance of witnesses on scene and video captured on a citizen’s cellular phone, officers were able to identify (Walsh) as the suspect responsible for stabbing Hammond,” said Torum. “A large amount of evidence was located to link Walsh to the crime scene and the stabbing itself.”

Paramedics treated the victim, identified as Cody Hammond, 23, of Redding, and eventually transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment of “non-life threatening wounds,” said Torum.

Based on their investigation and the witness and victim statements, officers arrested  Walsh.

During their investigation officers also identified Edward Grijalva, 52, of Redding, as having been involved in the altercation. Although officers determined that Grijalva was not responsible for the stabbing, during the incident he had made threats towards the victim.

Grijalva was also arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, making criminal threats and carrying a concealed dirk or dagger.

An online jail records search revealed Walsh remains in custody and he is being held without bail. Grijalva also remains in custody, held on $25,000 bail.
