Deputies assigned to the Burney Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the area of Mt. View Rd. and Quebec St. near Burney Cemetery around 4:40 p.m., after receiving reports of an armed confrontation between two neighbors.

When deputies arrived on scene they contacted 49-year-old, Bonnie Montgomery, in front of an apartment on Quebec Street. Deputies also located Keith Birse, 48, nearby on the 37000 block of Mt. View Road.

Montgomery appeared to have serious injuries to her left arm and her head, consistent with being struck with a blunt object.

During their investigation deputies interviewed both Montgomery and Birse, as well as several people who had witnesses the altercation. Officials learned that during an argument between the pair, Montgomery had armed herself with a set of hedge trimmers and advanced toward Birse, threatening to stab him.

Fearing for his safety, Birse retrieved a baseball bat to protect himself and subsequently struck Montgomery causing injuries to her arm and head.

Although officials did not specify how many times Birse struck Montgomery, they determined Montgomery to be the primary aggressor in the incident and subsequently arrested her and transported her to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries. Birse was later released.

According to sheriff’s officials, Montgomery will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats and the case will be submitted to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
