A deputy assigned to the Anderson Police Department was on patrol last Sunday when he spotted William Avery Nash, 63, of Oregon, near the youth center.

While speaking with Nash, the deputy conducted a records check that revealed the man was a registered sex offender who last registered in the Hillsboro area as a transient.

The deputy questioned Nash about what brought him to California and Nash stated he had traveled to the area “in search of a woman to make his wife,” an Anderson PD official later explained.

The deputy also learned Nash had been contacted by local law enforcement officials the previous month, but had failed to register as a sex offender within five days of coming into California, as required based on his sex offender status.

Nash was arrested and booked into Shasta County Jail on suspicion of failing to update his sex offender registration record.

An Aug. 10 jail record search indicated Nash already pleaded guilty and was sentenced. He remains in custody and is being held without bail.

Located at 2889 East Center St. in Anderson, the center – which was established in 2001 and is managed by Shasta County Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council (CAPCC) – is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and offers a “safe and productive environment for area youth,” according to their website.

The center is open to youth ages 9 to 18 and features various daily and regular, recurring leadership, recreation, artistic, and educational programs for both boys and girls, as well as mixed, co-ed groups.

In addition to cooking classes, arts and crafts, sports, board games, basketball courts, foosball, air hockey, and pool tables, the center also features computers, homework help, and free snacks for the teens.
