PVHS student collapses during Menifee ROTC practice, later dies at hospital

MENIFEE — Area residents and students are in mourning after a Paloma Valley High School student collapsed and later died after suffering a medical emergency. The tragic incident happened while the victim was on campus during ROTC practice, Friday morning, Oct. 5.

The victim has since been identified by school administrators as freshman, Jake Drost. PVHS administrators shared news about Drost’s death on its Facebook page.

“During ROTC practice this morning, emergency services were called to our campus to attend to the student’s medical needs,” according to the PVHS post. Drost was rushed to an area hospital where he later passed away.

Officials have not specified the nature of the medical emergency, or what Drost was doing during the ROTC practice when he collapsed.

“We ask you to hold this family in your thoughts as they face the tragic loss of their child,” PVHS administrators said in the social media release.

Administrators have said they could not release any additional details regarding the incident “out of respect for the family’s privacy.”

Grief counselors have been summoned to the school’s campus and are on-scene to help students, staff, and parents deal with this tragic loss.

During his time with the sheriff’s department, Trevor worked at several different stations; including Robert Presley Detention Center, Southwest Station in Temecula, Hemet/Valle Vista Station, Ben Clark Public Safety Training Center, and Lake Elsinore Station; along with other locations.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 28 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 14 – but soon to be 16 – grandchildren.

  • Jake Drost was like a brother to me. Not only was he my lil brother vut he was my best friend and my “human ray of sunshine”. Jake was so young. He never deserved this. But he was strong the whole time. He was always able to make people laugh. Even with the smallest of smiles, he was able to make your whole day brighten up… Jake Drost will be missed greatly. R.I.P.
