Parolee arrested after Lake Elsinore pursuit, crash

LAKE ELSINORE — A Lake Elsinore parolee was arrested after crashing during a short police pursuit Thursday afternoon, Jan. 10. The chase, which lasted several minutes and covered about two miles according to sheriff’s officials, began in the area of Riverside and Walnut drives and ended when the fleeing man crashed into a fence in the area of Laguna Ave. and Jamieson St.

Last Thursday’s incident began about 1:50 p.m., when deputies assigned to the Lake Elsinore Police Department’s Problem Oriented Policing Team were conducting proactive enforcement in the area of Riverside and Walnut drives, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. James Woodland said after the arrest.

During their patrol, POP Team deputies spotted a red Hyundai SUV they recognized as having been reported stolen earlier that day.

Deputies attempted to conduct a high-risk stop on the stolen SUV, but the driver, who was later identified as Carlos Chavez Castillo, 30, of Lake Elsinore, refused to yield to the deputies’ lights and sirens and sped away from the officials, who initiated a vehicle pursuit.

“The pursuit lasted for several minutes as the suspect drove through the northwest area of the city of Lake Elsinore,” explained Woodland. “The pursuit concluded when the suspect collided with a fence and the vehicle became disabled.”

After Castillo crashed the stolen SUV, deputies apprehended him without further incident, according to Woodland.

Castillo was booked into Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on suspicion of for vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, recklessly evading law enforcement, and violation of parole. A jail record search indicated Castillo remains in custody and is being held without bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned at Murrieta’s Southwest Justice Center, Jan 14.

“There were no injuries to bystanders or deputies as a result of this incident,” said Woodland.

He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 28 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 15 – but soon to be 16 – grandchildren.
